K5NWZ • STATION RECORDS

Every contact tells the story of a signal

A radio logbook records who made contact, when it happened, the frequency and mode used, and where the other station was located. This page turns those records into a beginner-friendly look at how amateur-radio signals travel—and lets you explore real contacts from my station in Loveland, Colorado.

LIVE FROM THE SHACK

Is K5NWZ on the air right now?

The status panel comes from my station activity. If I am operating and a compatible application is reporting, you may see the current frequency or a recent spot. A blank status does not mean the station is broken—it usually means I am not transmitting or that the current activity is not being reported by that service.

What does a logbook record?

Identity

Who was contacted

The other operator’s callsign identifies the station. Online callsign databases can add a name, location and grid square.

Radio

Band and mode

The entry records where the contact happened—such as 20 meters—and whether it used voice, CW, FT8, VARA or another mode.

Propagation

When and how far

Date, UTC time and location reveal changing band conditions. Many logs also store signal reports, power and equipment notes.

READ A SAMPLE CONTACT
KE8X   2026-10-12 21:05 UTC   20M   FT8   EN80

KE8X is the callsign; 20M is the amateur band; FT8 is the digital mode; and EN80 is the station’s Maidenhead grid square. Together, those fields preserve enough information to understand and confirm the contact later.

Why keep a log?

A technical record

A log shows which antennas, bands, modes and power levels are working. Over time it becomes a practical history of the station and changing propagation.

A collection of radio journeys

Logs preserve memorable local contacts, distant DX, parks, special events and digital exchanges. Confirmed contacts can also support awards and personal operating goals.

Examples of amateur-radio awards earned from confirmed contacts
Confirmed contacts can qualify for operating awards based on countries, states, grids, bands, modes and other achievements.

These are real station feeds. They are read-only and may load at different speeds. Some contacts can appear more than once while services synchronize or while both sides of an exchange are being recorded.
